At Mountain Lumber Company, sourcing isn’t just procurement. It’s preservation. Since 1974, we’ve built our reputation on knowing exactly where our wood comes from, how it was grown or how it lived, and ensuring every plank we mill honors both its past and the planet’s future.
We source two distinct categories of wood, each held to the same uncompromising standard: reclaimed timber salvaged from America’s historic structures, and newly harvested hardwoods drawn from responsibly managed forests. Together, they give our customers the full spectrum of character, performance, and sustainability.

Mountain Lumber first became known for reclaiming wood long before sustainability was an industry buzzword. Our team searches the rural landscapes of Virginia, the Appalachian region, and beyond for historic barns, factories, textile mills, and warehouses that have reached the end of their structural life but not the end of their story.
Each reclaimed beam and board is carefully selected for its history, character, and beauty before being milled into flooring or architectural materials. We hand-select timbers from:
- 19th-century agricultural barns and tobacco structures
- Industrial-era factories and textile mills
- Historic fences, bridges, and commercial buildings
- Decommissioned warehouses and rail structures

Every order of newly harvested hardwood is sourced with a strict eye on quality and the greatest respect for the planet. We partner with FSC-certified forests and regional land stewards who practice selective, sustainable harvesting, ensuring that for every tree milled, the forest continues to thrive.
Our newly harvested species are selected for density, grain character, and long-term performance. We prioritize domestic sourcing from the Appalachian hardwood region, keeping transportation distances short and supporting local forestry economies.

Unlike companies that broker wood from third-party suppliers, Mountain Lumber manages the entire journey from raw timber to finished product in our Waynesboro, Virginia mill. Our expert craftsmen de-nail, saw, and kiln-dry every board in-house, giving us complete control over quality, moisture content, and grading.
